2017 OCTOBER NEWSLINE

The 44th edition of MATT’s Quarry Cup was a great success! Thanks to all who participated in any way.

Here is a message from the President:

It took a very big team of people to put on the 44th Annual Quarry Cup.  The Quarry Cup had an ad in ‘On the Pegs’ and was also on the Internet. The grounds looked great (a lot of work was done to make this happen; terra forming, spraying, clearing, etc.).  The sections and loop were awesome, the camping was organized, the trophies and t-shirts looked great, the Checker crew did amazing, the food was “very yummy” (small person quote), and the score shed crew were … truly wonderful. EVERYONE pitched in to make it a great event.  All I can say is the Mid-America Trials Team is aptly named because this all took teamwork.  Thank you to everyone (our club and others) who helped make this event fantastic for the largest rider turnout (87 total riders) in more than 10 years.

Talk about a varied trials. Dry on Saturday until about 5:00 PM, monsoon rains, and then “tacky” conditions Sunday.  The Trials Masters, section builders, and checkers deployed to reset sections for the condition changes Sunday morning and nearly everything was ready for the event. The kids trials were moved to mid-day Sunday and it was awesome to see the concentration on their faces getting through the sections.

 Thanks to all,

Richard Bowden

Yes it was a QC with its obligatory rain showers! Conditions were great on Saturday for both sessions then the monsoon struck with folks huddled together under the pavilion enjoying the comradery while waiting for the HyVee catered  fried chicken and fixins’ meal.  Intermittent rain and a few thunder BOOOOMS occurred over night. Trials Masters and section builders scrambled to make changes to the sections to accommodate the conditions.  Scores for the morning session Sunday were higher than the day before but afternoon scores were pretty consistent.

The rain did postpone the Rookie/Cadet session from Saturday to Sunday afternoon. Special thanks to Matt and Adam Hopkins who forgo riding to manage their competition.

Injury Update: MATT member Allan Newcomb took a spill in a section on Saturday morning and was rushed to the hospital. Allan had dislocated his elbow. Doctors popped it back in, bandaged and immobilized it then sent him back to us. Allan was in good spirits, complementing the good Samaritans that came to his aid. He had no malice for what had happened to him and took full responsibility for what happened. I spoke to Allan on Friday after the QC. Still immobilized but keeping a good attitude, Allan gave me a great quote “I am amazed at how much of a big deal it has proven not to be!”  And when his wife said he is getting too old to ride, Allan said he ‘played the David card’. In other words, if Allan doesn’t ride, his grandson David Bricker would not get to ride and David LOVES trials! I spoke again with Allan on 9/26 after his appointment with a specialist the day before. Allan feels fine, can use his hand a little bit, figured out how to roll over in bed with his injury, is using a more flexible sling which allows some movement and is bored to death! Doc said he cannot go back to work for at least a week because it would not take much to dislocate the elbow again and that would require surgery. Once Allan can perform all the tasks on a list the Dr. gave him he can go back to work. I know I can say for all of us: Wishing you a full and speedy recovery Allan!

On a more somber note I am sad to report that our friend John Hensley has passed away after a very long, hard fought battle with cancer. Rest in peace John.

Here are some stories/comments I have received, thanks so much for the inputs:

Section 2 on Sunday loop 1: riders are walking the section. Steve Morgan is ready. He dons helmet and mounts GG then enters the section. From the entrance he proceeds up the rocky slope, reaches the apex and begins his descent to the exit. As Steve controls his speed by applying brakes he realizes: This is not my bike! This is Carl Hopkin’s bike! Steve cleans the section on Carl’s bike that looks just like his, wearing Carl’s helmet that looks and fits just like his! (I did this recently only the helmet was too small. I had to try it three times before I decided it was not mine.) So now Carl is ready to ride his own bike after Steve trained it in the section. Carl mounts HIS GG and kicks. It doesn’t start. He kicks again and again…15 times! Then realizes Steve did not reset the magnet on the kill switch! Problem solved, bike starts, Carl is winded! Later Steve said he was going to have to adjust Carl’s brakes in case this happens again!

Keri Dennis posted a video on FB of her son Nathan riding section 1 on Saturday next to the score shed. Hugh Hadfield commented “I think this is why people start riding trials. It looks so easy when these guys do it. Oh how wrong we are.

Spencer Sutton is a friend of Keri’s who attended the QC responded: “Like Tennessee Whiskey!!!” Keri asked him if he got to see much and Spencer replied “Yes Ma'am it was definitely worth our trip and I expected you to be covered up, being a big "Official" and all ! Lol The course looked really good to me and I am not a trials rider, outstanding job by Keri, Randy Dennis and the club, it was a nice event to attend!!!

Keri said another friend that works with Nathan brought his daughter Lucy to watch and within the first 5 minutes of her watching trials she told her Dad that she will be riding trials soon. She said he needs to buy her a bike. I guess she went home and got on her bicycle and was showing her Mom how we ride trials by riding up and down the steps!-) Hopefully we recruited another girl rider!

Trials retread Hugh Hatfield (welcome back Hugh!) was acting as minder for his buddy Joel Whitworth. At Randy Dennis’ section someone noticed an irregularity on the Sr Am line in front of a log in the section. Randy, Joel, Hugh and Luis Belaustegui (don’t even try to pronounce it) were studying the mass. Randy said “Well that looks like dog sh..!” Joel and Hugh agree. Luis says “We do not know it is dog sh.., maybe a nervous rider sh.. before riding the section!” Hugh proved his worth as minder/friend by wrestling the load out of the section with some sticks. Reminds me of an old Cheech and Chong bit.

Dale Malesek was a roving checker Saturday morning and he decided to help me score section 4 to keep things moving the first loop. Riders began on the trail and headed downhill into the gulley. Novice riders followed their line down then broke to the right going parallel to the gulley bank briefly as they went back up the hill ending once again at the loop trail. A young rider on a TY80 entered the section going cautiously down but hesitated at the bottom. Dale made his way to his left, setting up in the rocky gulley next to about a 3 foot drop below the Novice line. And just like that, the young rider went forward then toppled over right into Dale’s arms! Dale said “I could see it in his eyes!” Jenean Wofford was standing next to me and said “I swear Dale must have ESP. If he gets near me I’m going to be scared to death!” Great catch Dale!

Not everyone was disappointed by the rain! The water hole across from the pavilion was a popular spot for the kiddos. Not sure how this one went down but he just picked himself up, dusted himself off and started all over again!

Here is a lineup of Cadets waiting to enter a section on Sunday afternoon. President Bowden supervised the youths as Matt and Adam Hopkins utilized their extensive herding skills to keep the line moving! Three cheers for the future stars of trials!

JOHN HENSLEY’s services per his daughter Katy: Dads visitation is going to be held at Butler Funeral Home (407 E Broadway, Bolivar, MO) Friday September 29th from 5-7pm. His funeral will be Saturday September 30th at 10am (at the funeral home). The burial will be held in the field behind Walnut Ridge (Van) Missionary Baptist Church following the service. The one thing dad would of wanted is for everyone to come hear the gospel at the services. EVERYONE is welcome to come. No matter who you are! He was a man who loved his church and would of wanted everyone to be a part of it.

Some of you may be aware that I took a spill on Sunday in section 5. Felt like I got blindsided by Justin Houston! I have a deep bruise in the upper left thigh and some bruising on my lower leg.  No x-ray has been taken but I am able to walk on it so I doubt there is bone damage. It is still very stiff and sore so the going is very slow!

I want to thank EVERYONE who helped me: Bruce Carver for retrieving my bike from the section; Joel Whitworth who spotted my pain while I walked #6 and helped me out of the section with Ken Brown’s help; Butch Clark who shuttled me to the score shed in Bruce’s golf cart; all the gals who took care of me at the pavilion, getting me ice, getting me out of my boots and pants ; my personal Dr, Keri Engle who evaluated me and continues to be a great source of information; Greg Engle who loaded my bike and hitched up my trailer; anyone I may of forgotten or provided assistance without my knowledge and ESPECIALLY Cathie who has always been my very best caretaker!

A number of friends have been checking on me and I thank them for that. So the update is I am getting better but I will not be going to Sedan this weekend. I REALLY REALLY hate that I cannot participate in this terrific event and VERY disappointed that I will miss seeing all my friends there. I expect to be back in the saddle for the Fry Lake CRTC rounds.

Happy trials to you until we meet again! And watch out for Justin Houston!
